320 MHz: Recognizing WiFi 7’s Ultra-Wide 320 MHz Channels

COVID-19 has slowed down pace of life for some, but it has also improved the ways we connect with each other through the Internet. And the more time we stay at home –working from home, FaceTime with friends, watching movies online, shopping online, and playing online game — the more important our WiFi connection is. Luckily for us, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has recently upgraded the WiFi protocol to the latest technology, known as WiFi 7. One of the major advantages of WiFi 7 is a channel size of 320 MHz, the widest available. Let’s explain what that means.

What does 320 MHz mean?

As you can see, 320 MHz is twice as wide as a 160 MHz channel, and four times wider than an 80 MHz channel.

Imagine the channel size as the width of a lane on a road, and the data as cars. The wider the lane is, the more cars that can drive on it. That’s how you can transmit the most data on a 320 MHz channel.

What are the advantages of 320 MHz?

1. Faster transmission rate

Imagine the channel size as the width of a lane on a road, and the data as cars. The wider the lane is, the more cars that can drive on it. That’s how you can transmit the most data on a 320 MHz channel.

2. Double transmission capacity

320 MHz channels have a data rate that’s four times greater than 80 MHz and twice what a 160 MHz channel is capable of. In other words, WiFi 7 has double the transmission capacity of WiFi 6 and 6E technologies.

3. Less interference

320 MHz channels are used on the more open 6 GHz band. By avoiding the more popular 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, there can be less local signal interference with your WiFi connection.

Do I need 320MHz?

The advantages of 320 MHz channels as described can improve network performance for scenarios including IoT smart lights, outdoor security cameras and smart locks, empowering you to build the ideal smart home. Meanwhile, you can experience the most high-tech VR/AR worlds for online conferences, exhibitions, and persistent online environments like the metaverse. Moreover, you can enjoy smooth cloud gaming across a range of different network devices. Get ready to enjoy the magic of 320 MHz!
